Garage floors usually slope slightly toward the door, but a full tank puts out enough water to run under the interior wall between the garage and the house before it reaches the door. We check the adjoining rooms with a moisture meter rather than assuming the water stayed in the garage, because drywall and baseboards on the shared wall are the first thing to wick it up.
My home is on septic and it backed up inside. Is that handled differently?
Yes. A backup that comes through floor drains or the lowest fixtures is not clean water, so the affected materials and the cleanup are treated to a higher sanitation standard than a supply-line leak. The plumbing side, clearing the blockage or addressing the drain field, has to be solved at the same time, otherwise the space cannot be released as dry and safe.
Should I start pulling up wet flooring myself before you arrive?
Shut the water off and move what you can lift off the wet floor, but leave the flooring in place. Pulling tile or laminate before extraction can spread water into dry areas and make the damage larger. Getting the standing water out first, then deciding what has to come up, keeps the affected area from growing.
